THREATS
There are 5 species of rhino, all of which are endangered in some way. The Sumatran rhino, the smallest and only Asian rhino with two horns, is critically endangered with a population of 80. The Black rhino, an African species, is also critically endangered with a population of about 5,000. The white rhino, the second largest land mammal, is near threatened with a population of about 20,000. Javan rhinos are the most threatened of the rhino species with a population of 58-68. The greater one-horned rhino or "Indian rhino" is listed as vulnerable with a population of about 3,500.
All of these species face threats of poaching. Many rhinos are also killed for sport. The illegal wildlife trade threatens many different species, though rhinos are the most universally hunted species. The real threat is the demand for their horns through Vietnam's black market.
